is there a program out there thats free i can use to retrieve forgotten passwords for the widows log on screen. i assume i put this post in the right spot. thanks in advance.

Which Windows operating system(s)?
If you have physical access to the systems, it shouldn't be too difficult to get into them.

xp or vista. would be nice or both. i tried to google it but im looking for something free and with so many bogus sites and programs out there i thought to ask here....i trust you guys!!:D

Might be against the rules to help you here, however google would be a good place to look for OPHten used cracking tools.

ok sorry i didnt mean to break any rules. thanks xor. im studying to be a+ tech and thought something like that would be useful to help people get on with there daily lives. wasnt thinking anything like this for malicious reasons <darth vader breathing sound>

You cannot retrieve passwords. You can retrieve the hash and, if it's simple enough, crack it given enough time and CPU power. But the password is not, and will never be, stored in plain text or a reversable encryption. Ever.

ntpasswd allows you to reset the password, not retrieve it.

And keep in mind, resetting the password will remove access to any locally encrypted files if using EFS.
As Arainach said, best bet is retrieving the hash and cracking it. This is significantly easier if they are still using the lanman hashes (still default behavior until Vista/08).

ntpasswd allows you to reset the password, not retrieve it.
it will also allow you to change it. but I've never really used that. no need on my part

Not just easier, it is trivial to crack this very flawed way of storing it (well, 99,9% of them).
