hey all,
noticed something different when powering up my computer today: when i push my power button, there is a slow delay with some flickering noise involved before my computer powers up and posts. seems like its struggling a little before it completely powers my computer. i have a scyte fan controller, and the display flickers now for a second before powering up. never used to do that. i have sli evga gtx295s with the evga voltage tuner. i reduced my gpu overclock and voltage to the gpus, and the flickers and struggles when powering up has decreased, but is definately still there. could it be signs of a psu failing?
psu: silverstone da1200
cpu: i7 @ 4.00ghz, 1.375 v in bios
mobo: evga x58
gpus: 2x evga gtx295
thanks for reading
Yes, it does look like the PSU is struggling.
Unplug as much as you can and see if things improve more.
If it suddenly stops occuring, see if one of the items you unplugged is the cause.

I agree with Nenu. Sounds like a PSU with a soon to be imminent death. The first thing(s) you should try unplugging are those power hungry 295s! You can also unplug all the drives; don't need those to POST.

If you're going to recommend dedicated GPU power supplies, at least recommend the decent Thermaltake 650W unit (http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=122) instead of the shitty FSP GPU boosters.

No, I have not. However, I have used many a shitty PSU that have worked fine, so that isn't a good indication of the quality of a PSU (as you well know). Regardless of my own experiences, the TT unit is confirmed to be good based on the JonnyGURU review I linked you to. Why not just recommend something that is known to be a fairly good quality product? That's my only point here.

however if OKW or Jon says the TT is a better product, then I agree recommend the TT booster unit.

Exactly the point I was trying to make :).

i've always had good customer service from silverstone. they suggested i try pluggin my psu directly to the wall to make sure its getting "clean" power, right now its connected to a surge protector. they also stated that if i still had problems with it, they will be happy to replace it so long as its within the warranty period and that i provide an invoice. i'll see how it goes with it directly pluggged into the wall. but doing this may only be a "bandage" to the problem.

Silverstone sells good PSU's & they stand behind their products.

The DA1200 is based on a Seventeam 1200W server unit with known PCB warp issues:

See page three for a pic of the issue. I'd RMA the Silverstone. There is no way is it not enough for two 295's, and supplementary GPU units will not fix this issue.
