I originally posted this in the wrong "room" when it should have been here, so please pardon the double post:
I'm trying to "fix" a co-workers hd that crashed. It's a 80gig Raptor model #: WD800ADFD-75NLR1 Specs below:
Rotational speed 10,000 RPM
Average rotational latency 2.99 ms (nominal)
Spin-up time (drive ready) 7.0s average
Cache (total) 16MB
Seek time (without command overhead, including settling):
Read 4.6 ms average
Write 5.2 ms average
Interface transfer rate:
Buffer to Host: 150MB/sec maximum
Buffer to Disk: 84MB/sec maximum
Interleave factor 1:1
Needless to say he got a BSOD that indicated there was an error in the boot sector. I took it home and was able to recover everything he wanted off the drive (with "Runtime - Get Data Back"). So far I haven't been able to format it with Vista or with WD's "Lifeguard" tool but that's likely because I don't know what I'm doing. Windows shows the drive as empty with a RAW file system. 80gig drives are available on NewEgg for around $40 so my coworker is just going to buy a new drive (it's for a work-only pc and he doesn't need a bigger drive) and I'll keep this damaged one.
I hope I'll eventually figure out what I'm doing wrong/what to do and get it back up and running again but I'm wondering if I'm spending my time wisely. I assume it's not big enough to use as my primary drive (which also assumes it's even wise to use a once-failed hd as a primary drive) given that I'm running vista and have 4 games installed on my c-drive. This leads me to think the only use I'd have for it would be to chuck it in as just another slave drive. Am I missing something here? Would it make sense or is it possible to install my OS (Vista 64 Ultimate) on this 80 gig drive, use my (current c-drive) 640 gig WD as a slave (which I planned to do down the road anyway when I got around to buying a "faster" primary HD), and install my games on the 640 slave? If this is advisable and/or possible, is there a downside to installing my games on the bigger slave drive?
I'm not sitting at the pc in question (it's at home) so I don't honestly know how much room I need for my OS. I've lazily downloaded a bunch of movies and what-not to my primary drive and just haven't taken the time (yet) to clean it up and move all these downloads to one of the various slave drives in my case.
Sorry for all the questions but thanks in advance for the advice.
EDIT
----I didn't realize that it 'may' be under warranty so I'll look into that this evening.
