I've been having a hell of a time ever since I decided to reinstall MS Office 2007 Enterprise, which I decided to do after all my Office documents randomly changed over to the "unknown file" icon and refused to change back. Basically a traditional uninstall could not be done, and I had to manually uninstall each component, as well as remove the registry keys per instruction on MS's website. This was fine and seemed to finally get rid of the program (or at least enough of it to register as uninstalled), but now I simply cannot reinstall it. I am getting error messages that "setup cannot locate the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio" (which I do not have) and then if I create an empty folder myself, "setup cannot access the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio." I even tried my older copy of MS Office 2003 and am encountering the exact same error referencing the exact same folder.
After reading http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;228658 it seems that there is an issue with the permissions on the destination folder. But a) why would my permissions have changed since installation, and b) why is Office even using resources from Visual Studio, which I do not even have on my computer? Can someone more knowledgeable about permissions and Windows in general please advise?
