I used RocketDock for awhile but moved on to using sTabLauncher, which has a much smaller footprint. I don't go in for using the music containers or their attempt to add an explorer like browser interface.

However if you are looking for an app launcher that will categorize a lot of programs for you it's a good way to go. On the minus side there is no taskbar functionality but I get that through both AltDesk and my alternate shell Emerge Desktop (middle click menu's are a good thing)

I use RK Launcher. Smaller footprint than rocketdock, support for object dock and yz dock objects, easily customizable.

Um, what's wrong with the Start menu and task bar in Windows? I don't see the real benefit of these docks. Enlighten me.

They're shiny and pretty.

But really, I keep my desktop perfectly clean, with games in RocketDock and programs I often use in the Quick Launch toolbar.

I use an alternative shell called EmergeDesktop (http://emergedesktop.org/) which doesn't really have a Start Menu as most know it. It's in middle and right click menu's. The setup is modular and I don't even run the Taskbar applet. I found I used AltDesk (http://www.astonshell.com/altdesk/) as combination Virtual Window Manager and Taskbar instead.

As for why? I have always despised the XP Start menu and ultimately it's just personal preference. I know most folks would hate how I work and the workflow I use. Everyone has to find their own way.

I tried to like the docks but they just didn't work out.
YMMV

Not only that, but it gives users a chance to use something new. After using the same Start Menu for... what.... 5 years? It's nice to do things a little differently.

I recently switched from Rocket Dock to Object Dock Plus, and it's fucking amazingly better.

Free version of Object Dock is crap, but just steal the Plus. :-)

You mean the $20 spend on objectdock plus will be well spent?

I think he is suggesting you pirate it and not pay for it.

I think he is asking to be talked to by mods.

Rocketdock is good, I always wonder but if there is trojans or stuff in freeware, i know there are descent people out there who release software because they are creative and arent all about money, but i still worry.

Rocketdock here also. I have no issues with it AT ALL. Does what it's suppose to and free. It's funny how some are complaining about how much memory it's using, 4.5MB. Besides most people here have 4GB+ these days... interesting how people still look at memory footprint for things using under 20MB of RAM.

You should use gentoo linux mate. You will love the dozens of options for a desktop and window manager setup. KDE, Gnome, enlightenment, xfce, the *boxes, the list goes on and on.

I just moved to quad core I am gonna go back to it soon =)

Rocketdock user here (sometimes, when I can be bothered installing and setting up after a format).

A lot of programs, like daemon tools and Digsby IM, have a bunch of adware but you can easily decline them and get a clean install of just the program if you pay attn during install and decline on the boolsheet. It's clever for the devs as they get some revenue from it but their users still get a program in perfect condition.
