I had a server running Server 2008 as a domain, and that's what my PC connects to. I'd like to reformat that server and install WHS, and not have it running as a domain. If I go to My Computer properties, and just remove it from the domain, and add it to the default workgroup, will I still be able to log in to this account? I think there are some programs that are only installed with this account, and just all of my settings and preferences are there.

Best route for this?

To clarify, Box1 is running Server 2008 and acting as a domain.
Box2, my desktop, has been added to said domain, and logs in using an account created within Active Directory.

I'd like to no longer be a part of that domain, but retain this 'user' account, in terms of settings, etc.

Once you remove the computer from the domain, there's no way to log in as a domain user anymore. I don't know how well it would work to make a local account and copy your domain user account to it, to be honest. Typically, I've found that a program is available for all users, they just need shortcuts created on the start menu for them. So, it shouldn't be a big deal. You could test it out very easily by making a local account now, and logging into it.

Thinking back to when I added it to the domain initially, all the programs were here, just not all of my user settings.

The little things like my quick launch, and other settings will piss me off not initially having.

This will help too...

C:\Users\Tim.ITHICA0\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Just the folder with all shortcuts. Cool. Just a matter of when I want to do this.

Those are easy to set up, they just take some time. You could easily create your local account now and get it to your liking before pulling it out of the domain.

Inside Advanced System Settings you'll have all the places to copy your accounts around.
