I remember just 2-3 years ago getting my opteron 144 and then 165 and OCing the crap out of them, cheap great OCers higher cache and such.....

so i was watching a video on virtualization made by AMD and rackspace and i thought, hmmm i should look at what they are currently selling. I have a phenom 9600 X4 in my mediaserver, running Vista ultimate X64 Host and VMware Server2 Guest OS WHS

it chews through power.... i noticed an extra $25 a month when i went from a BE-2400 to the X4 and i could go with a more powerful CPU still

@ 75w thats 20w less than i am using now and at $150 its only $60 over what i paid and could probably sell my 9600 for.... if it saves $10 a month that not a bad return if i keep it running for 2-3 year 24/7

just a thought..... why dont people look at opterons anymore for home build.

Because WHS doesn't require so much horsepower, save money and get a super efficient dual core.

i've been using an AMD sempron Le-1100 single core cpu. 65nm and 45w. Not the lowest power, but not high by any means

runs everything fine for WHS. unrar is not as fast as it could be, neither are backups... but im not really too concerned for a home environment.

I really see no need to go anything higher unless you're capturing TV or transcoding from the server.

I've been running SageTV on my WHS box as listed in my sig. Even with compression and commercial skip running, it still doesn't cause me any issues even with streaming to three different sources at the same time. The power just isn't needed.

My WHS is currently a E6600, will "downgrade" to a E2180 when it is rebuilt. If I didn't already own the 2180 I would probably look at dual-core Celeron.

okay so what you all are saying is that a low power dual core does everything you need wth WHS...

well that makes some sense...

WHS is a dry operating system with a application overlay, there is nothing fancy underneath... it's litterally a computer with drives connected, no specialized anything or raid controllers/drivers (which can eat your resources) or anything of that nature.

It doesn't need much, I believe minimum recomended is a sempron, and that has no problems until you overload it with tons of plugins.

I have a C2Q in mine but that is only because I turned my desktop into my server since I don't have room for it while living with my brother. According to my kill-a-watt it draws 125watts idle with 4 drives and 138 under 100% load. So hopefully with a low power cpu i can get it below 100 idle and it wont have to go under full load since I won't be encoding movies on it when it gets rebuilt.

my WHS is a virtual WHS running on vista ultimate so that i can record TV and share it on the network...

hopefully WHS2 will have tv recording .... although i doubt it.
