Annnd so far there's one success story posted on the seagate forums. I'm still planning on waiting a couple days, see if there's any other hidden surprises.
Update: now there's several success stories on the seagate forums, and one failure... with a 500gig. I'm still patiently waiting for more feedback.
As an aside, someone called the drive a "brickuda" which made me laugh.
Here's the forum to check for success rates... http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board?board.id=ata_drives

I succesfully applied the firmware update to the following drives:
1x 750GB w/ AD14 firmware
1x 500GB w/ SD15 firmware
7x 1000GB w/ SX15 firmware
The data is still accessible and the 7x1TB were in a raid and
the raid was detected normally by the raid card.
To flash them, I used a second computer to direct attach
a sata cable from the onboard sata port to the hotswap bay -
this way power was never cut to the drive at any time.
Still waiting for an update for the 1.5TBs.
I did update them with the earlier SD1A firmware, but AFAIK
that only addresses the stuttering issue.

The support site is showing that the firmware is still in validation. Does that mean the SD1X firmware isn't the right one?

I'm terrified because just today one of my 5 drives in my array isn't starting up. Looks like this update is just in time, hopefully I can flash them to safety. I have SD15 on my drives, I'll let everyone know how it goes...

I've run it as a boot image, it runs freedos, which you don't see from within windows. It can then detect any applicable drives, and flash from there. You can't update the firmware from within windows. Course, it's no use to me, since it doesn't detect the drive that died on me today :(

After 40minutes on hold, I got through to someone, they told me that my drive qualifies for the data recovery, basically they will remove the board, force a new firmware on, and if it works, you get the drive back, if not you can pay for other data recovery methods, or you can get a replacement drive for free.

updated 2 es.2 from SN05 to SN06 with this link. had to break raid array and rebuild just to be safe. hopefully no further fuxing is required!
also appears seagate is not responding to emails for es.2 updates but will some time in the future do a mass mailing. if it wasn't for this link i prob. would have switched to re3 and returned the seagates.

Thanks, I'll just do it the standard internal SATA way. Now that a newer firmware is supposedly out, I guess I'll use that instead and discard the CD I burned w/ SD1A on it.

I successfully upgraded my '340AS's firmware (FW) from SD15 to SD1A, after I put that HDD in my computer (SATA) as the only HDD (I disabled the other HDDs). The procedure was straightforward, but what was a little odd is that it asked me via a DOS menu what hard drive I have (3 choices). Mine was "B" for the 340AS, but once I press "B", it never asked me to confirm or even hit enter. It just proceeded w/ the upgrade right away.
What if I accidentally pressed the wrong letter? Would it have put the wrong FW on the HDD? Anyway, after it was done, it prompted me to press a key to shut down the PC. Then I cold booted up, installed Windows, then confirmed w/ Drive Detect that it's now at SD1A. Let's hope this FW fixes the problem for good!
Note that Seagate recently changed the Web page for this FW where you can't just d/l any FW anymore. You have to enter your serial #. I guess too many people were d/l'ing the wrong FW?

Well I dropped the drive off in person and talked to the lab tech, the guy on the phone said its 3-5 days before they even respond to me with the status of the drive! and 2-4 week total turn around time is listed on their site for the free economy class Data Recovery you get with this issue
I hope the lab tech is right and I think he is, basically they're going to force flash a new firmware to the rom chip(this is what I is thinking) which takes a lot less time then removing platters and backing up data

Not bad at all! Kudos to Seagate on the quick turnaround time. I guess they had to do it b/c their reputation took a huge dive w/ all the problems people have been having w/ the 7200.11.
