Hey,

I'm about to move all my Media (HD) to a new Windows Server 2008 machine.
I need that server to backup a laptop and desktop ocmputer, while also serv as home NAS.

I have good deal for Hitachi Ultrastart A7K1000 (HUA721010KLA). (http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/DF2EF568E18716F5862572C20067A757/$file/Ultrastar_A7K1000_final_DS.pdf)
What do you think about this drive ? how is Hitachi act in the storage ?

Not very familiar with Hitachi when it comes to HDD's, but why not just pick up a proven Samsung Spinpoint 1TB for $95 shipped from newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152102&Tpk=samsung%20spinpoint%201tb). Its fast to.

EDIT, well it looks like they no longer have free shipping. Still a very fast drive for a great price.

A. i'm not from the states :(
B. i have the Hitachi for, 60$. i work at Datacenter, and our supplier have them.
C. If i mostly stream HD movies, how the drive speed will effect my use ?

Edit, i found the HD103UJ (Samsung) here for 135$.
The exact price i have for the Hitachi is 88$.

Should i pay the extra money ?

Having a similiar issue.

I am currently using 5 x WD Enterprise RE3 WD1002FBYS, WD RE3 1TB 32M 7200RPM SATA II for my QNAP 509 Pro Nas in Raid5.

Now i am considering getting another 5bay NAS to be used as a backup duplicate. So now i need to decide what drives to get.

WD Enterprise RE3 WD1002FBYS, WD RE3 1TB 32M 7200RPM SATA II @ 144.866 USD

HITACHI Ultrastar A7K1000 SATA HDD (32MB) 1TB [OEM] @ 64.3991 USD

So i found a bargain for the Hitachi Ultrastar at 64 USD which is half the price for the Western Digital RE3. Both are raid and 24/7 certified. The biggest difference i found was the hitachi is a 5platter, and thw Western Digital is a 3platter. I also heard that the Hitachi is hot, noisier, and uses more electricity.

The seller is also saying that i won't be able to claim any warranty for the Hitachi although he is claiming they are brand new o_O;

So should i get the Hitachi which is half the price of the Western Digital? Or should i get the newer A7K2000 drive?
