Im looking for a sata card i have a optiplex gx520 that im going to turn into a WHS. The problem is it has only 1 internal sata.
Im looking to do raid mirrored 1tb drives.
How come esata is a 3.0 but alot of the internal cards i look at dont appear to be that speed ?

Because many of those internal cards are old and are based on an older spec. In addition, the eSATA standard was created after SATA 3.0Gb/s was standardized. Hence why there is no 1.5Gb/s eSATA standard.
Also, if you're using WHS, whats the point of using RAID1?

Alternative for what?

Alternatives to RAID1? No RAID, and the other RAID levels. Alternative to RAID1 for data replication? RAID5, 6, and 10. Why do YOU want RAID, at all, for a WHS box?

Just pick up a dumb sata controller and use whs and turn on duplication, ghetto raid 1 right there and your not screwed if the card dies.

If you accidentally hit "delete," it will still get deleted from both drives in a RAID1. RAID is NOT a backup solution. If you want to backup your data, use an external HDD or similar -- something you can keep offline. An online, live mirror is mainly to minimize downtime in case one of the two drives fail. A RAID5 array would protect against a single drive failure, since it can rebuild that data. A RAID6 array would protect against a two-drive failure. However, again, the best backup is offline and offsite - if possible.

im using 750x4 in RAID5 and 5x500 RAID5 in my whs server , each as a folder, with duplication enabled.
probably overkill but what the hey.
edit: once my shared get too big, i'll just pop off duplication and rely on my spare hotswaps drives!

Well i was going to setup a 100gb drive as the main os drive and then have all the data on the 1tb w/ a 1tb backup is this not a good method with WHS?
