I have been using my 1.5tb for a while now and havent noticed any real issues with the drive. The drive info is ST31500341AS - 9VS04JGP - SD17. Is the update really needed?

Seagate told me my drive is in need of an update. Then they did not supply me the firmware? Thier site doesn't seem to offer it. How can I find the right firmware for my drive?

I have the same model (ST31500341AS) and firmware (SD17). I've been using my drive for a while as well and have had no problems. I checked the link provided in the front page story to the Seagate site for fixing these drives. It still shows that they are evaluating which firmwares of this model drive are affected.

I would not upgrade the fw and take the risk of a dead drive/or inaccessable files on it due to the fw fucked up the drive that seems to be common in the atempt to save the 7200.11 series. No need to fix a drive that is fully working. If the drive is affected i would demand a new drive and no "fix" that is potential dangerous for the drive. This with or without a complete backup i would stay put and keep updated backup until it really is solved and fully tested by seagate.

The drive is just a backup drive. I currently have all my data on other drives as well. My concern is a use Vista also but have not used it much since I got the drive. I heard there are more issues with Vista then with XP. Is there a way I can tell if my drive has issues in Vista?

For my 1.5TB drives, I needed it. It was a non-pleasant experience for me. Just getting the drives "removed" from my system took well over an hour. Once they were updated, life was good. I had the drives with the CC1G firmware. As for the update, I did it with the CD ISO method and removed all other drives but the 1.5TB from the system.

I would not update any of the SDXX drives until the new fix comes out. SDA1 has been causing drives to become paper weights and they have pulled it. The main problem with the firmware on your drives is that the drive may lock up for 20-30 seconds during a slow transfer such as streaming audio / video.

Havent had that yet but I dont watch videos off of it. I have copied over 1.2tb of data without any issues or locking that I noticed. I am more or less worried about data corruption or the drives health.

As posted in another 1.5TB drive thread, Seagate has SD1B for the SD firmware based drives. See http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207957

Yup... did the update a few hours ago. Burned ISO to disk.. hooked up only that drive and booted to the cd. No problems.
