So I recently changed my friends computer to its proper res of 1680x1050, he had everything at 800x600. He then complained saying "Everything so much smaller, put it back" I was like there's a lot more space now and it's now widescreen which is what your monitor is. He still kept complaining, so I put it back, but how do you explain to someone just how much better it is to keep everything at a proper res?

Explain to him that the picture he sees is made of of thousands of little dots. the more dots, the better the picture looks. you probably don't need to go into aspect ratios or any of that jazz.

up the size of the text along with the higher resolution. that's how i got my dad to start using the native res on his computer.

It's his computer, let him use it how he likes? You showed him how it looks at a higher resolution, he didn't like it. Let it be. If you still feel like you must mess with other peoples things, set it to 960x600 if you can. That'll keep the 16x10 aspect ratio, but keep things big enough that he might still like it.

"better" is in the eyes of the beholder. Literally in this case.

Maybe he is one of the 'few' people with average eyesight that prefers not to sit with their nose touching the screen?

Show him the windows appearance options to create large fonts and large icons. You can also show him how to adjust font size in browser windows. If he's still unhappy, leave him be.

Show him the picture on this page. Explain where the markers for his old res are and where you put his new res. Show him HD res's and a 30" LCD res. He may end up buying a new 30". j/k

Also, set his fonts bigger at the higher res:D
