View Full Version : Is it possible? Keep windows from going off screen?

I'm using Vista 64, and have a nice big 24" monitor. Today I realized I spend a lot of time moving windows around can't figure out why I'm allowed to drag things off the screen. Is there a reason this is necessary if you never change your resolution?
So, is it possible to prevent windows from going over to the edges? In the same way the cursor can't go over the "edge" I'd like to make a barrier so windows can't move over it either.
Sorry if this is an obvious question, I tried a few searches but had no idea what terms to lookup.

Maybe its to hide programs for when the boss shows up.

I'm not quite sure what the hell the OP is asking - does he mean he doesn't want [i]any part of any window to ever cross the borders of the viewable area onscreen? If that's the case... wow, that's... a first for me. :)
Unfortunately, Windows doesn't have a tiling window manager like Linux does these days, so there's no way to automagically force everything to fit inside the borders of the screen.
I'm stumped on this one... I guess I just can't comprehend the usefulness of such a thing myself... the "Desktop" of your PC is supposed to be a computerized-equivalent of your desktop as if it was laying in front of you, with windows aka documents like pieces of paper, or folders stacked on top of each other. There's a limit to how clean and neat this stuff is gonna get... :D

Keep in mind, in Windows 7, when you drag a window off the screen, it automatically re sizes so it stays on screen.

So the way I'm thinking about this... is why would I want to be able to drag things off of the Desktop? If I could keep them from going over the edge it'd be way faster to move my windows around..

Right click on the taskbar, Show Windows Stacked/Side by Side?

Yah, I just didn't think that was what the OP wanted/wants because it only applies to the windows open when you execute that command. When new ones open or pop up, they don't follow that anymore which then REALLY gets confusing. :)
So my statement about it being a tiling manager was still accurate; it's a one-shot based on whatever's open at the moment you do it.
I still can't figure out why anyone would want it, but then again I know some diehard Linux folk that can't live without the TWMs available nowadays...

Show Windows Stacked/Side by Side does help somewhat so thanks for that. It doesn't sound like Windows has what I'm looking for, which is too bad, but I'll live.

I have 2 monitors, one running 1920x1200 and another running 1600x1200 and I still run out of desktop space all the time. I find it handy being able to move windows at least partially off the screen in some cases. There may only be a part of the window that I need to see while I need to see all of another window and the won't both fit on the desktop at the same time. Then again, it's easy for me to have 10 different windows open at the same time, working with all of them and have some other apps open which are nice to have viewable at the same time.
I don't think I've ever heard of something in or for Windows to keep from dragging part or all of a window offscreen. However, the only way a window ends up there is if I move it there on my own so it's never been a "problem" for me.
I think the one thing I would like to have with Windows is the ability for programs and windows to snap to the screen edges when they are a certain distance away from the edges. That is something I miss greatly from Linux.

That would be incredible.

That would be incredible.Several reviewers (http://activewin.com/reviews/previews/windows7/) have said that Gadgets now snap along edges; it's not impossible to believe that they've implemented the same thing for windows, although I haven't specifically seen it mentioned.
