Vista: Access to external HD

I'm currently away from my other PC so I forgot the exact wording but whenever I plug in my external hard drive, Vista does not let me access some folders from it because it is protected or something. It then tries to give me access to those folders without any success even though the status bar finished. Anything I can do to turn this security feature off?

i have found that it is usually several minutes after the status bar says finished that I am able to get into the drive. I just wait for the folders to pop up on the drive. Try making an account on your machine that is the same as the one that was the main acct on the removed hdd.

It should come up and ask you if you would like to access the hdd when you first click on it

other than that I have no idea maybe someone can add some insight
