I have searched this problem but nothing come up related to my issue. I just bought my HP Dv4z laptop and I decided to put WinXp on it for dual boot (I hate Vista). For reason, when my Winxp disk boot into “Setup is starting windows”, I get a blue screen 0x000007B error. I tried scanning my HD for error but nothing is wrong with drive. Is this problem related to master boot record being protected my Vista? How do I wipe it off if that is case? Currently, Vista is still working.

My machine is vista 64bit home premium edition.

You need to supply the correct driver for the hard drive controller via floppy (when you first boot from the installer CD you will see a "Press F6 to install additional drivers" prompt at the bottom of the screen), or use a tool like nLite to slipstream the driver OEM driver into the XP install process on a build you own installation CD.

The hard drive controller is supported by Vista.

That's because most xp discs don't have the right sata drivers loaded. the newer laptops use some raid drivers that you'll have to slipstream onto an xp install disc.

http://www.nliteos.com/

you can make custom install discs really easy with that. I don't remember what driver is needed though. When I go to work tomorrow I can find out for you if someone else already hasn't.

Thank you for your reply. I will look into this. I need to read up on how to slipstream.

You don't really need to read up on anything. nLite will walk you through a wizard and out put a disc image ready for burning and installation.

The problem I have right now is finding SATA driver. I have no idea where to get those. I don't think they are Intel brand.

I'm not familiar with the ATI chipsets, but have you tried looking in the BIOS to set the SATA controller to use legacy or IDE mode? If it is like the Intel chipsets, this setting works with XP without any extra drivers.

He won't be able to do this because of Vista. You might be able to change it, then install XP, but one of the two won't work. I tried loading some drivers after the fact to use the IRRT stuff (new dell crap) and it wouldn't work. Only way to successfully do it was to slipstream the driver.

Worth a shot though I guess. But you might risk causing Vista not to load again.

Crap, I missed the part about the dual boot. I was thinking he was wiping Vista off and putting XP on only.

Was I correct in saying that this is an ATI chipset? If not, who makes the chipset?

I can point you to the driver I used at work tomorrow. I had to do a lot of searching on not being able to get the eSata port to work on the new dell latitude e6400 series. I can only imagine it's a similar chipset, which were intel drivers I used.

Not having the easiest time finding out what your chipset is. Try using CPU-Z and let us know. It'll help find the right driver.

Try creating the the nlite xp install cd with this driver:

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_DownloadFile.aspx?FileType=Driver&FileID=3742

When you go through the nlite wizard just select the whole folder and then both the drivers it finds. Select Text-Mode and it'll auto-detect which is needed.

:) I had this same exact problem yesterday, actually.

I was installing 64 bit Vista on my system. Ran it fine a couple hours, configuring my Apps, running Windows Updates: then it borked.

Actually turned out that Windows tried to install some Richo driver, which totally fudged the system. Safe Mode didn't work.

But the odd thing is, off the repair console on the Vista DVD, it detected my disk just fine. It utterly failed in repairing it the few times I tried it. I even tried to load the driver, but it failed in doing that. However, at re-install time (I gave up trying to fix it) I used the driver on the regular installation wizard and it worked fine.

Go figure.
