i have

160gb
primary, ntfs, 20gb, xp pro spk3

logical disk
logical, ext3, 4gb, reserved for knoppix
logical, ext3, 4gb, opensuse
logical, swap, 1gb, linux swap
primary, ntfs, REST, data partition

i used norton ghost to clone all data mode , do i need to back up the swap partion as is it not just random/cache/ temp data ?

if i was to resetore the hdd partitions i would just point open suse to its /swap partition any way wouldnt i ?

yes i know for back ups sake , its only a 1gb partition compresses to only 154mb but i am trying to get it to fit onto 1 dvd

No. The Swap partition is like an extension of RAM, it is overwritten all the time and does not need to retain data between sessions.

yup

just make sure you either make it in the same drive node (/dev/sd*) or update your /etc/fstab to register the new drive location. Or use a SWAP file ;)
