Evidently, the "Deathstar" persona from Hitachi may come back to life. I ordered 3 of the 1 TB:

2 of them are on the way back in the morning. They sounded like one of those ice dispenser machines at the convenience store  Seriously. My wife said it sounded like shaking a coffee can full of pebbles. The 3rd works beautifully. :(:(
So, was this just shitty luck this time, or has there been a high failure rate on the newer Hitachis?

If you're going to spend that much on a HD why not buy the 1.5 TB Seagate HDs? Better quality and more space.
you bought them at newegg, 90% sure thats the cause the drives died, their shipping on multiple hdds leaves a lot to be desired.

I ordered a hard drive from Amazon for the first time a couple days ago. A WD6400AAKS. It came in a rectangle cut-out of thick black foam, which was then sandwiched between two layers of the same material. This was tightly-packed into a box of the same size as the foam. Then this box was inside a bigger box with air pocket things. It was so beautiful I maybe probably almost could've cried.
I don't think Newegg's packaging is that bad for one hard drive. For multiple, however, I hear it can be pretty disappointing. Was each HDD wrapped separately or how did they come?

Neweggs packing on hard drives is the suck.

My single drive was wraped in bubble wrap( 1 layer) and placed on the very bottom of the box with a wad of shipping paper crumpled up and thrown on top.
newegg really needs to fire some people in the shipping dept

I've had single HDDs from Newegg and they've always have a generous amount of bubble-wrap. I know, I know. Manufacturers frown on this method, and it appears to be inadequate, but the HDD is perfectly suspended inside a lot of cushioning. I bet it's not as bad as it seems. Ever think about how your stuff is handled in the warehouse before it's even placed in the box?

I have to agree.

Oddly, the drives (3 Hitachis + 1 WD 640 AALS) came very well packed. They were in a big styrofoam block, suspended with bubble wrap and peanuts in the big box. The shipping carton also looked brand new, so UPS didn't beat them up. I think NE doesn't handle drives well at their warehouse sometimes.
