View Full Version : I just got two 640gb WD Black drives. Should I put them in Matrix Raid?

How should I set this up?

I really only need less than 640gb of hard drive space, so that doesn't matter. I want to give about 150gb to my windows drive and the rest to storage.

What should I do?

In you need redundancy and don't need the extra space, then I would mirror them. Personally I have an external hard drive for backup, and could use the space, so if it was me I would stripe them for the write performance gain, and wouldn't worry about the added risk.

RAID0 all the way.

You will be amazed. No need for redundancy when a good backup plan exists. The performance increase fun-factor far outweighs redundancy. Unless this is a mission critical box. I believe in redundant, multiple, computers at home. At work, in my datcenter it's obviously a different story.

What if I split the drive. Will it affect performance on the windows side?

I've never tried partitioning a raid0 volume, but I'm sure it would work and that you wouldn't lose any performance. I still don't see the point though. Just my opinion.

i did a matrix raid on my aaks. might as well you know :). raid 0 for OS and games and raid 1 just for important files(school, projects, etc)

I've got two of the older AAKS drives in RAID0, the performance is outstanding. I divided it into a ~180 GB partition for windows and a 1 TB partition for other stuff.

I just wanted to see 1 TB in the drive properties. :)
