Hey all.
I am looking to get a hd enclosure for my 3.5" 320gb SATA drive.
This is basically the setup I want to happen:
I want to have the external hooked up to my ps3 and computer at the same time so I can transfer movies and music and such without going through the hassle of unplugging stuff all the time.
They are about 10 feet away from eachother.
I don't know the best approach to this, or what enclosure to get.
Would this best thing be to get one with a firewire and usb, and have the firewire hooked into the computer and usb to the ps3? And I've seen alot of enclosure with an eSATA slot, what is that?
Thanks to all that help :)

What you want is a USB switch. You can't have it hooked up to multiple things simultaneously without issues (without a switch). PS3 doesn't have eSATA, so I wouldn't worry about that if you don't want to bother with unplugging things.

From my experience with my ps3 I've found that media streaming is WAY easier then moving files around. I upgraded my hd in the ps3 to a 160 gig and used to move files to it but now I just run the playon software on my vista box or Tversity on my mac and just stream the same files along with netflix and hulu (with playon)
Super simple and super easy.. except you must have the host computer on while doing this.. that's a negative.

ive done the whole tversity/nero streaming thing and it just wasnt working out.
so what you are saying is i cant have the external plugged into my computer and ps3 at the same time through a firewire and a usb respectively?

what im thinking is:
buy an enclosure with a usb and firewire port
have it plugged into the ps3 via usb all the time, and whenever i want to write something to it (music/movies), plug the firewire into my pc.
this should work since i wont be writing any data from the pc to the hard drive would it not?
What you need is a USB A/B switch. Like this: http://www.amazon.com/Device-Switch-Printer-Scanner-etc/dp/B000I97N4O
Firewire + USB wont work, so don't bother.

and how does this work?
the external plugs into the switch, then one usb to the ps3, and another to the pc?

yup. Then you just press the button for which one you want to use. Works just like moving the USB cable back and forth.
