OS on a separate drive

Any benefits to having the OS on a separate drive that is not part of the raid array? I was thinking of putting the OS on a Western Digital Raptor I have laying around.

- If your OS gets hosed and requires a reformat, then the data on the array is safe.
- If the RAID array gets hosed, the system itself will still be able to function since the OS drive is separate.
