I wanted to upgrade my wifes laptop HDD. I could have done it with Acronis...but decide to let WHS do it instead to simulate a drive failure. It could not have been simplier.

1. Backup HDD one last time via a manual backup.
2. Shut down and remove battery/power.
3. Remove old HDD (keep just in case) and install new HDD
4. Put battery back in and power cable
5. Connect laptop to network via ethernet cable (no wireless)
6. Put in "restore" CD
7. Follow instructions
8. It will eventually bark that the new drive is empty, just format with a partition (it gives you a button for the sever 2003 type tools).
9. Wait for a while (does about 15 Mbyte/sec from the server to the laptop HDD)
10. Profit???

Honestly...less painful than Acronis (and Acronis is easy) Remember since it is a cluster type bacup...even all the work on Vista in terms of fetching/searching is maintained.

I'm glad to hear this becuase I was worried when I clicked "open backup files" to view them and it got stuck at 79% and I was really worried that this might cause problems later on in a restore situation.

That's awesome. I wonder if I could use the same method for moving my boot partition from 2 X Raptors to 1 Velociraptor.

I don't see why not, but there could be some difficulties in there somewhere.

Excellent! My wife has filled her laptop HDD and I was going to get a new one when I see a deal. I figured I'd also use Acronis, but now I'm itching to give this a try.

I've done this exact procedure before when upgrading HDDs. Works like a charm, in about as much time as a full Vista install takes, without burning any discs (unless you have to burn the WHS restore CD, of course)

I've seen that happen before also. I figured my setup was borked (because it usually is). Interesting to hear other people suffer from it as well. At any rate, I too suffer from that 79% lockup, but can still restore successfully.
