updating an old xp pro to vista 32 bit.
is all the junk, including potential malware and spyware cleaned on install.
I don't mean av scanner or anything but are all files replaced when you do an upgrade ?

No, not all files are replaced, because your settings and applications remain. System files related to the OS are replaced, and that's it.
If you don't want the junk to remain, back up your data, and do the clean install trick. It's in the Stickies section.

yes, it doesnt clean your system before hand, you need to do that.
