I need to copy a Vista partition onto a different hard drive. if i use DriveImage XL will it copy to the new hdd and still boot? or am i going to have to repair windows in order to get it to boot again. Everything in the PC is going to stay the same but i want to put the information on a smaller drive. (I am taking my GF's 500gb that i put in there and replacing it with a 250gb hd she only surfs the net and 250gb is still more than she needs)

As long as you don't change any hardware besides the hard drive it should be fine.

I am not changing any components just hard drives. I figured it would be safe but i wanted to make sure.

Acronis True Image
I second that. I used it to migrate my vista x64 from an 80gb hdd to a 320gb hdd without any issues at all. it resized the partition and everything. When you buy it, it comes with a bootable cd that can do the cloning with pretty much no input at all.
They also have a beta for the 2009 version thats free right now, but i dont know if you get a bootable ISO with that.

If either drive is Seagate, a free alternative is Seagate DiscWizard, just a watered down version of Acronis True Image
Have used it several times in the past to migrate both xp and Vista installs to different drives of varying sizes

I tried that and it doesn't work for me. It tells me no Seagate drivers found but I have 4. 2 standalone and 2 in Raid 0. I wonder if it's my Nvidia storage controller?

Same here, thats why I recommend it. We use it to clone HDDs before service work to a windows server with 2 RAID 5 SCSI arrays (one internal, one external w/ its own controller).
Its much easier than ghost for our setup.

NovaBACKUP 10 is what I use and it's a ton better then TrueImage in my opinion you can get it here (http://www.novastor.com)

The flexibility of the software allows you to do more with it than Acronis. From tests that I have done personally I've seen Novabackup restore more cleanly and quicker where in the same tests I have had Acronis fail. It's good software, just give the demo a shot it is a fully functional demo
