SO I have had THREE of these drives die on me in less than 1 week. About 1 year after purchase. I had a drive with all my data (about 500gb worth) and that went down. I had the backup of that data on a second drive and 1 hour later that drive went down (IN a separate system) and then the third drive (backup of backup which was in the 1 system fail too). What the hell gives?

The computers are on UPS's so no spikes and they are running fine (OS Drives) but these drives are just failing. Now I have a fourth drive that has been clicking non stop (death is eminent with this one too). SO I lost 2 years of data now because of these drives.

Is there anything I can do? I am going to RMA the drives (I Think they have a 5yr warranty) but that doesn't help my data.

Any thoughts? I heard the drives (when I bought them) were great and fast and blah blah blah..

I know hard drives fail but I mean seriously going on 4 in round about 1 year? Something is amiss.

ps The place the computers are in is a constant 75 degrees and NOT humid (my apt).

What power supply do you have? What else is in your machine? Four of the same drives failing in the same time is highly improbable.

For the record, I have ten of these drives in my care and have had no failures or signs of failure.

Well only 2 of the drives were in the same machine. The first drive (with all the data on it was in machine 1 and the backup was in machine 2, they both failed. The third was in a Drobo (a RAID machine kinda thing). The fourth is in Machine 1 and is now about to fail too.

The first and fourth drive are powered by a Corsair 520 power supply. In the RIG is
1 - 80gb hard drive (OS)
2- 750 gb Samsung spinmaster drives
4 gb of Gskill Ram
a low end 256mb video card 7600GS I think
1- DVD Burner.

The machine is NOT overclocked at all.

The first drive failed and will not power on AT ALL Now. The second drive did the same thing. The third drive was in a DROBO unit and that drive will not power up at all either. The fourth drive is clicking constantly now and will probably fail by end of the week. (click of death is coming)

So I have three drives that will not get any power at all and a fourth about to fail.
I have no idea what the heck is going on with them, I wish I knew and I wish there was a way to get the data off the first drive because I lost all my new data off of it because the second drive failed to. The Drobo has a backup but it's about 1 month old.

Theres your problem

Yep, more than likley.

Considering that the poster had these drives in different machines, I'd also suspect bad batch or bad shipping.

Ok well I have 7 of these drives total. Jeez... Now I don't know if I even want to put any data on them at all. just in case this happens to the rest of them...

I guess I am RMA'ing the three/four that i have that are bad and hoping I get a better batch..
Ryan

any other suggestions?

Wow, that is very odd. I would certainly be dumping the RMA returns on Ebay and switching to another model/brand if I was in your shoes.

I just bought 3 WD GP 1TB drives and 1 of the 3 was DOA. If another dies in the first year, I will prolly switch them out for something else.

I would also contact Samsung directly and explain the situation. I would bet they would be VERY curious to realize you bought all the drives from the same lot/location. This is the kind of data companies need to find flaws in their products/process. You also have me a bit trepid as well since I have 4 of the same drive in my WHS server. Guess I'll have to start swapping them out after a year and upgrade. :)

That's why it's good to keep some backups. I don't take chances, I've bit the dust a few times, so now it's all backed up or duplicated in a remote location.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I did format them all before hand (since they weren't my OS drive I did this in the computer management Disk Manager app)

I will certainly be calling Samsung and letting them know for sure. I was a little curious since when I got the drives they were just wrapped in bubble wrap and nothing else and just in a box with "popcorn" .

Guess that's the last time I buy a HD at newegg.
