Hello everyone! I'm new to the NAS storage stuff and I am in need of some help. I can't seem to find any good "how to" guides or resources for my NAS that I can understand or that answer my questions.
I recently purchased a Promise NAS NS4300N for $299 and popped in 4 Seagate 650GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache drives ($80 per). The NAS rides on a gigabit 3Com switch with a couple of 4 year old Dell Tower P4 Window XP machines.
The raid built itself automatically (RAID 5 - Block Striping with Distributed Parity). I moved over 450GB of data without issue.
I then upgraded to the latest firmware and installed the plugin to allow streaming to my 360. NOTE: For some reason it did not like the .avi extension on some of my movies so I had to go into the command line and rename all my .avi movie files to .wmv so the 360 could see and play them.
Q1. I am unable to get my HP PSC 1210 All in One printer to work via the NAS. The printer shows up on the network and I can right click it and select connect. It doesn't seem to realize the drivers are already installed on the computer. Secondly, the web interface for the NAS won't let me enable the Print Share. All the options to accomplish this are greyed out. Anyone have any ideas???
Q2. Since my RAID 5 built itself without any input from me, I didn't get to choose the configuration I wanted: RAID 5 - with Spare Disk. Maybe I am missing something in the web insterface utility, but I don't see where I can modify this... I have cruised through the RAID management section in the web gui without success. If I do change this, will all my data get erased or will it build the new raid and keep the data?
Q3. Where can I get more info on the DLNA Media Server Plug In, more info on the web interface, and NAS data management suggestions?
I'm sure some of this is pretty noob, but I appreciate everyone taking the time to educate me.
