Anyone know if you need a data plan or the $5.99 wap internet plan in order to actually get online with your phone?

I'm trying to get my hermes/at&t8525 on the internet, Im almost positive I have all the settings right (I googled for the tmo data information and configured proxy and everything like that). When I try to load up a site on IE, it says either:
HTTP ERROR $CODE$
$MESSAGE$
RequestURI=/

or something along the lines of the webpage could not be loaded because their are errors on the page.

Basically I just want to know if you can get online using the cellular network without a data/internet plan.

thanks in advance...

At minimum, you need the $5.99 data plan to go onto the internet via a proxy. Otherwise, whatever data you use gets charged as text messages, which one of my friends discovered the hard way ($14 for a couple of minutes online).

Anyway, I have an unlocked AT&T Tilt (aka HTC 8925, Kaiser), and I was experiencing similar problems until... well actually, just about an hour ago. If I remember correctly, you're getting the HTTP error because not all of the proxy settings are filled out. In addition to entering 216.155.165.50 in the "Proxy Server" box in the "Proxy Settings" tab, you also need to click on "Advanced..." and fill out the fields exactly like so:

HTTP: 216.155.165.50:8080
WAP: 216.155.165.50:9201
Secure WAP: 216.155.165.50:9203
Socks:

(8080, 9201, and 9203 are the port numbers)

Please note that you need to manually clear the Socks field. It needs to be empty for the phone to connect to GPRS/Edge successfully.

Let us know if that works.

When I went on my phone, it said it was connected to 3G.... I thought 3G wasn't coming out with T-Mo until like Oct or Nov...

Anywho, I setup the proxy EXACTLY how you said, and set my connections so that programs that access the interweb use that connection. Now I get an IE pop-up error that says:

The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later.

I tried several times, and where I'm at right now, I have good service (I know Microsoft isn't exactly 'on' with their error messages). Anywho, think it's because I don't have and internet plan?

I have the wap.voicestream.com settings all correct and everything.

Yeah, you need a data plan (the minimum being the $5.99 T-MobileWeb plan) to go online. I do wonder how my friend managed to connect without one and incur the $14 charge, though. Anyway, if you have online access to your T-Mobile account, you can add the data plan by just clicking a box and waiting a few hours to a day to take effect.

Another setting you might want to look at: tap on "Select Networks" in the "Advanced" tab (next to the "Tasks" tab) when you first enter the connections settings. The first scroll menu should read whatever you called your T-Mobile connection.

Okay, well I feel much better about not being able to get internet on my 8525 now. I'm buying a blackberry, adding my girlfriend to my plan, and getting the blackberry plan for me. So I don't need to worry about her racking up the data bill... just the minutes :-\ She's quite the talker. lol.

Glad she doesn't want anything more than just minutes and texts :-D.

There's always MetroPCS for the minutes- and text-hungry :D.

Presently, my girlfriend and I are on the $69 family plan, with both of us using separate data and text plans. At the end of the month, the total charge comes out to around $90-$100. It's not too shabby for the two of us, and far better than her previous plan with AT&T: a whopping $70-80 monthly bill due to AT&T being... AT&T, and her costly internet plan.

I'm just ticked that my Tilt probably won't be working with T-Mobile's upcoming 3G network, bar some new firmware upgrade that enables the 1700 band .
