I just finished my new build and it's my first time with a multi-core processor and pci-ex. My specs are in my sig. My issue is with loading Vista Ultimate 64. All my hardware works and is running at stock speeds; I have not tried to over-clock anything at this point. I have my rig set to boot off my DVD drive first then the HDD. I put my Vista DVD in and restart the computer. I find it odd that Vista does not ask me if I want to format or partition my HDD but then I dismiss that since Vista immediately starts loading files. When that is finished it goes to a black screen with nothing more than a green progress bar. After that it tries to launch Vista but it freezes at the Welcome screen and the messed up thing is, there is nothing but the blueish/greenish/turquois background image. There are no Windows or Vista logos, nor any other words, or menus or buttons...nothing. I can move my mouse around and turn my various keyboard locks (num lock, caps lock, etc) on and off, but that's it. If I take out my Vista DVD and then try to start up my computer with out going through the install process again, my computer just keeps asking me to insert a disk into the boot device and press any key to continue. What the hell is going on here? This is the eighth computer I have built from scratch in the past 7 years and have never had one give my any problems during the build or during the OS install, except this one. But, like I said in the beginning, this is my first time with a multi-core processor and pci-ex. This is very frustrating and any insight is much appreciated.

I had the same issue on my build. Until I figured out that you need to change the settings on your SATA hard drives in your BIOS to AHCI, it may be set to something like IDE.

I might have seen something like that in my BIOS. I'll give that a shot.

I've had a very similar problem. Turns out the Windows install DVD was bad. If it's not the AHCI setting, you may want to see if you can find another install DVD, especially if this is a burned disk, like you would create from an MSDN or Technet image.

While the disk being bad is a possibility, I bought my Vista from newegg.
