View Full Version : Increasing space "on a RAID 5 array"

Hello all,

I am working on a solution that would allow for a repository of data.

I believe a cost-effective way to do this is to purchase a server, create a RAID 5 logical drive for the data and expand HDDs out using an external enclosure.

My main concern is: can you add an additional drive to a RAID 5? Does it depend on the RAID controller (do some support rebuilding the array with the new drive as a member)?

I'd like to start off with 3x 146GB drives, then increase by 146GB every time we need to.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

What you need is a controller that can support OCE online capacity expansion. Most controllers supports hot swapping and capacity expansion. This allows you to add drives on the fly and expand your raid array.

Just be aware that you risk your data on each expansion because it may not go as planned. So as always, keep a backup of all your data.

Thanks very much for the quick response.
I'll verify that the controller I recommend supports capacity expansion for RAID 5 arrays.

Backups, always a good decision.

Thanks,

Matt
