I'm not a hardcore benchy, I could care less about numbers, so...

Given that I'm a quiet freak (not just with computers), I've thought about grabbing a laptop drive eventually to use in my desktop.

I'd definitely benefit from the sound level drop, and maybe even the power usage drop.

One question though... would I notice a performance difference? Or would be negligible for my purposes.

You may or may not, a lot of it depends on the areal density of the platter(s) in the laptop hard disk compared to another drive, say, the high areal density on that fast WD6400AAKS. It doesn't totally come down to simple RPMs in the disk, you may experience slower response times (i.e., latencies) from laptop hard disks, or experience the laptop hard disk's nature of throttling down when not in use as a measure to conserve battery life.

However, it quiet is your primary concern, you may experience benefit from the small form factor of laptop hard disks, but that also depends on the make, manufacturer, and model as well.
