View Full Version : Asus External Esata drive

i have one that has both usb and esata.Is there a special way to get this device working with esata ?I can get it working with usb fine but when i connect the esata cable,the connection disapears from explorer.When i want to use the esata connection i have to do a rescan for hardware changes then it shows as hitachi HTS541616i95A00 and when the Esata is diconnected it shows as hitachi HTS541616i95A00 USB device

Well, when a device is connected through eSATA it's pretty much as if the drive is an internal drive, as eSATA is just a shielded SATA cord with a slightly different connector to prevent the use of standard SATA on external applications.

Just be sure not to use both the eSATA and the USB at the same time, the external would have weird results if you did that! :)

but i have been told that the esata connection gets power from the usb port as the device hasn't got it's own power

What kind of enclosure/external drive are you using? More than likely if it is a 3.5" external drive, it has an AC adapter that goes directly to the wall socket/surge protector for power.

Kinda like how SATA alone doesn't power a hard disk, but it needs a SATA power cord (or Molex, if it happens to have that, too).
