I haven't built my NAS yet; I didn't even order the required hardware, but I already have a question.

Is it possible to configure freenas in a way that it is possible to access the shares over the internet?
I do not mean FTP, but any of the other protocols.

Ideally i'd like to connect to it by a secure vpn connection (or similar) and mount the shares like usual.

looking forward to answers,
have a nice day.

I guess if you have WHS or similar, on the NAS OS, you could use Remote Desktop to RDP to your router and have that port forward you to that system. (I think that's how it works;) )

Thank you for your reply, but i will not be using windows home server.

I am planning on using FreeNAS, as it is free, lightweight and open source.

Yes a VPN will work, but freenas won't provide a vpn for you, it's just a NAS

Check out OpenFiler....its free and opensourced
The Development cycle for it is much better. It will allow you to do much more than freenas

Not sure about freenas but most linux distros can be configured to share via sftp or sshfs with the proper packages.
