A lot of people have complained about newegg using bubble wrap and packing peanuts instead of industry standard foam protectors.
I received this package the other day. The only packing material was a few air packets. They didn't put anything in between the two drives. Unbelievable.
These drives are going straight to Western Digital RMA.

that's standart newegg's hdd packaging. When you order low quantity of hdds from egg chances are they gonna be DOA or die soon after installation. Buy from places that do good job packaging like fry's, provantage or zipzoomfly.

Why RMA them to WD? You then get refurbished drives. I would send them back to newegg, complain (though that won't do you any good), and buy it from ZZF.

I believe it. That is why I've stopped buying hard drives through them. I either order them from ZZF or locally at Fry's. I didn't take pictures but one of the last hard drive orders I had with them had a hard drive, DVD-RW and 2x1 GB memory kit packed loose in the box with just air packets on top and bottom of the box. The memory container had multiple dents from the corners of the DVD or HD banging against them

Is there anyway to tell if you get a refurbished drive or not? The last 2 drives I RMAed to WD came sealed in antistatic bags and looked just like any other new drive I'd bought.
I don't mind refurbished drives that much, I mean they should be fine since they're just went through the testing procedures. Plus, even with shipping these to WD, I got a good deal.
wd rma is draw of the luck sometimes you get new drives sometimes they are refurbished. I just rmad 4 drives at work and I got 3 new ones and 1 refurbished.

if you buy hdd from tigerdirect they do a better job that's all I can say
btw a long time ago I used to be a shipper for a large medical device manuf. the best way to ship those drives is probably to put them each in their own plastic clam shell (buffer for shock and between drives) then to tape those two drives together so they're a single chunk of weight. then you could probably get away using foam peanuts or air bags if it was like that, but having two bare drives flop around in a box is a joke

I don't see an issue with that packaging. What exactly am I missing? The one drive close to the edge of the bubble wrap? There's no way it could of been damaged or had anything hit it in transit.

On mine, it said right on top of the label. This was years ago however, so it might have changed.

That's better packaging than for the HDD they sent me. Mine didn't even have the large bubble packs.

The two drives were right next to each other and obviously knocked into each other during transit as can be seen from the dents in the antistatic bags. They weren't secured, free to slide around.

When I got my motherboard from zipzoomfly last week they put 6 air packets UNDER the motherboard box and NOTHING on top. Thankfully no damage was taken.

I just ordered a bunch of HDDs from mwave.com and they have probably the best packaging I've ever seen for hard drives. I bought 8 drives and they came in a box that specifically warned post handlers about the magnetic/electronic/shock sensitivity. The drives themselves were slotted into a styrofoam rack specially designed to hold hard drives. The rack could fit 20 drives. Below the rack was a layer of peanuts, and an top of the rack was a slab of foam. The box fit the rack perfectly. Best HDD packing I've ever seen for OEM drives.

You got the original manufacturer's packaging. When those stores buy drives they come in 20 packs packed just like you described. When customers buy larger quantity of hdds at once they usually reuse those boxes to ship the drives to customers.

Well Hard drives banging against each other in transit will damage the internals. HDD's are pretty sensitive to shock.

Tiger Direct usually does a really good job...they now own CompUSA now so I can just pick them up at the store.

if I order Online I use ZZF.

What warehouse did your hard drives come from? The hard drives that I've got from NewEgg's New Jersey warehouse six months ago were all liberally wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in a box of peanuts. I didn't think it was bad packaging except that two of the hard drives (still in their individual plastic shells) were wrapped together.
I though the hard drives I got from ZipZoomFly about a month back had less than ideal packaging. Sure, both hard drives were in their own foam containers. However, one of the hard drives was a notebook drive and was not padded so it was loose inside the foam. Plus, there was no padding inside the shipping box so the foam hard drive boxes were free to slide around. They should of at least stuffed the box with paper or something! The desktop hard drive was defective on arrival (might not have been the packaging though).
Anyway, many of the hard drives I get from ZZZ are DOA or defective. I'll probably buy those elsewhere since I live on the east coast; replacements take a long time.

Newegg might do to him like they did to me... claim that the serial numbers aren't on file and you can't RMA them.
I'd just use them and RMA them if they fail... no point in arguing with newegg, it's a losing battle... instead, I'd recomend that you don't buy drives from them.. thats what I do.

Please remind me never to trade or buy stuff from you. This is not even remotley adequate protection... it doesn't meet Western Digital packaging standards nor does it meet USPS, FEDEX, UPS packaging standards... in fact, NO one would even cover for that if you wanted to claim insurance.

i'm sure if you were a good enough googler, you could find a site that would let you look up the serial number to see if it's recertified. admittedly i've yet to find such a page.

I am glad I got mine from ZZF.. They came each in their own foam enclosure designed to hold hard drives, surrounded by peanuts.
the box looks pretty beat up and why the hell they stack 2 drives together??
Last time when I bought 2 drives from the egg luckily they're wrapped separately.

it depends who packs it really
i have gotten all kinds of types of packing from newegg drives. I once got one with foam inserts....
Most of the time, they wrap each drive in large bublewrap a few times, and surround with peanuts. I know its to "to specs" packing, but as long as they work, it works for me :D

I must get lucky. I ordered 3 hard drives from Newegg and each came separately wrapped with bubble wrap around them. Packing peanuts were in the box. I know it's not the foam protector that other stores send them in, but I feel like the packing peanuts, in combination with each drive wrapped in bubble wrap separately is perfectly fine for shipping.
But what the OP got was kind of ridiculous. They could have at least packaged each hard drive in a separate bubble wrap.
i think if more ppl bitched and stopped buying hdds from egg maybe they would fix their shipping practices it's not really that hard to buy some foam shells or something similar to protect the hdd in shipping.

I've bought (literally) dozens of drives from the egg. Never had a single one fail. this is over the last 3 years (give or take). Only once did they package them f*cked up, just wrapping them in "poofie" brown paper. Every other time they have been individually wrapped in bubbles.

I have never had a problem from the memphis, tn warehouse.
I have ordered drives and they come in bubble wrap and tons of peanuts.
What newegg warehouse did these come from?
Also, if you CALL newegg customer service, most of the time they will give you a free shipping label to RMA the drives if defective.
I have never seen those stickers / bar code on the drives from newegg.
Something is wrong with this situation.

Run SpinRite on them and make sure they are clean. Probably didn't hurt them...

I agree with the comment on the pricetags/labels. Mine have always been OEM vacume sealed static bags with a single "made in china" sticker on the outside. Holding a Seagate 750g in my hands right now (well actually sitting in my lap, but you get the idea).
