View Full Version : Multiple Partitions on Drive

For all you folks that are a lot smarter than I am.

I got thinking after reading a thread on another forum, what happens if you are using 2 partitions on the same drive (or Raid set). I tested using HD Tune, HD Tach, and HD_Speed. If I use multiple instances of any other these programs and test the same drive (HP_Speed is the only one that I can actually pick the partition, same results), it absolutely kills the reads. I am talking about a Raid0 array going from 150mb/sec to 30-40mb/sec.

So I am wondering about folks that split a drive/array and have a partition for the OS and another for games/data. Are we shooting ourselves in the foot by doing this? In my particular case, I do a lot of MS Access work. I have a mdb on one partition that pulls data from that partition and also from other mdbs on another partition on the same drive. Would I in fact be a whole lot better off using 2 separate drives/arrays?

Just curious if anyone has looked at this before? Maybe, I am just seeing problems running two instances of the same programs?

Thanks for any input!
