So, my old rig got clustered with a TON of viruses (computer got raped by trojans and malware all of a sudden), so I decided to reformat fully using an old XP Pro disc from a Gateway laptop of mine (SP1).

Specs: AMD 3200+ (Winchester), ABIT AV8, PNY 6800GT, 1GB Patriot 3200, Seagate 200GB 7200RPM - ALL stock speeds.
Monitor: LG Flatron L1710S

I get into desktop and install my LAN drivers, Nvidia driver (175.19), then DirectX 9.0, and restart. This is when it gets fun.

As I boot into desktop, my computer has become a painting, and it's Windows 98 all over again. It seems I'm locked at 4 bit 800x600 and everything looks ass-tastic. I think, oh shit, probably just installed drivers for the wrong OS, so I uninstall current drivers, run Drivercleaner, and reboot, and it's "normal" again. I reinstall the drivers, and same exact thing happens and everything is gritty and nasty. When I go into Run > dxdiag, it appears that my comp doesn't recognize my 6800GT. Isn't it suppose to, even without drivers?

Never had this problem before, any help? Did I not install something I should have?

Update: I install the drivers that came with my 6800GT and everything seems fine, so does that mean the 175.19s just aren't right with my 6800GT, or with SP1?

You'll want to check your chipset drivers and make sure they were put on first. If so, then try different Nvidia driver versions.

Also, you may want to PM a mod ASAP and ask them to chage your thread title.

Maybe it's because I didn't install my chipset drivers...

Don't put curse words in thread titles.

First off, patch your system to SP2 at least before you start installing new drivers.

Chipset drivers are very important since they will include AGP/PCI Express drivers, USB, etc.

Never patched to SP2, care to walk me through? :)

Just go right to SP3 and be done with it. There's no reason to use old media anymore.

And yes, the chipset drivers not being install could easily account for the problems you are having.

Why am I not surprised to see someone not thinking service packs were important, have to wipe out a PC because it was riddled with malware? You should have your internet service revoked!

Thanks for the help, but still shows up as SP1 in system properties...

Same thing happened to me with an ATI 1300. I installed the chipset, current drivers, updated my machine and worked like a charm :)
