I'm having a problem. I'm running Vista x64 Ultimate.

I'm getting hundreds of Event ID 11 errors in my Event Viewer. The source is atapi. Here is what it states:

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort2.

Now, there is another twist to this. I ONLY get this error after waking up from either standby or hibernate. I do not get this error on first boot or any subsequent reboot.

What could be causing this? Should I be worried about it?

Thanks!

According to this Microsoft Support KB, it means that your drive, or the port the drive's connected to, isn't ready to be used when woken up. It could be anything from bad driver, outdated firmware, bad hardware, bad cable.

There are tips to try out in that KB site. Yes, I know it says SCSI, but the idea is the same.

Yeah, that was actually the first that thing I looked at, although I thought my situation would be a bit different, since I'm only experiencing it after I wake the system from sleep.

BTW, tell me if I'm doing this right. Error source atapi means CD/DVD ROM only, right? And IDE2, regardless of it's SATA or IDE (I do have an IDE drive connected) could mean SATA port 2?

I do believe SATA shows up as SCSI devices for the most part. Your first IDE port would be 0, second 1, third 2, and so on.

Quite coincidentally, the first time I installed Vista, it took approximately 20-30 minutes to boot up, 3 hours plus to install. That was on the rig in my sig. Obviously something was wrong. I've had XP Pro on my system for years and I've had no troubles with it. But then again, I rarely use my LiteOn CDRW drive since I had a Plextor DVD -/+RW drive also, so I never knew my LiteOn was crapping out.

One day I decided to try Vista again and this time figure out why it was taking so long booting up, and when I pulled the LiteOn out and detached it from the IDE cable, Vista booted in 15 seconds.. woke up in 5 seconds or less.. installed in 30 minutes..

Seems to me that Vista is more unforgiving when it comes to bad hardware. XP would only tell you when you're using it, which was why I never knew, but Vista told me regardless.. although it didn't come right out and say "hey your LiteOn's crapping out." Be nice if it did! lol

Anyways, you might want to pull out the drive thats on your 3rd IDE port (IDE2) and see what happens.

Yes, that's correct, I'm finding that Vista is indeed much more unforgiving to bad hardware or excessive OCs.

Now about the drive, that would be SATA 3, right? But I was sure that the source atapi meant that the error was coming from a DVD/CDROM drive.
