Not sure whether to post this in Hardware or OS, but let's see :)

OK. Recently upgraded my rig to the spec in sig. Problem is now, I cannot get Vista 64 to enable DMA for my DVD drive (NEC 3550A). Previous rig had no problems (was nVidia 680i based, which makes me think it's a driver issue). It's currently set to PIO mode 4 and the option to enable DMA is greyed out.

So far I've tried :

Uninstalling Intel and Marvell Chipset drivers
Uninstalling/rebooting/reinstalling IDE Controller
Checked BIOS settings, BIOS reportes device in UDMA mode 2 at POST

Any thoughts?

Have you tried to use another IDE cable? It may be possible that the IDE cable is causing the problems.

Are there any other devices on the cable with the drive?

Well I'm using the same cable as I did on the previous rig, not sure if I have another one kicking around to test. No there's nothing else on the channel, just the DVD drive.

There's a registry hack that usually works, google 'MasterIdDataChecksum'

I should have said I've tried that too. There is no such entry in the registry.

Well the build was only a couple of days old so I decided to reinstall Vista. At the same time, I switched the BIOS settings for SATA to ACHI. Now not only is my HDD lightening quick, it's also set the DVD drive to Ultra DMA2 (there's also still an IDE controller showing PIO 4, but DMA seems to be taking the lead).

Just need to test Nero now and make sure burn speed is normal :).

Yep burn speed normal. So all is good again :D.
