I'm about to buy tomorrow... and I'm torn between 2 of the 640GB Western Digital drives or 2 750 GB 7200.11's.

Which ones?

What is it that matters, speed or storage? 2 750's will obviously give you more storage than 2 640's, but from what I've seen and heard the WDs are faster, if that's what you need.

The 640s have better performance, and are newer drives. Unless you need the space, I'd go with the 640s.

I own a WD 6400 and love it.

Getting cheaper (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218&Tpk=WD%2b6400AAKS), too.

No contest, the WD640 for the speed alone, unless you really need that extra 110GB of storage.

Along with better reliability. And probably noise.

just built a buddy of mine a system with this drive and it is fast and quiet. noise doesn't bother me per my current hard drive choice :D

oh, forgot to add, if you can try to look for the green line, runs nice and cool compare to the rest and uses 40% less energy,

I'd rather get the 640gb its much faster. And if you want to utilize all 3.0gb/s on the Seagates you have to get a jewelers screw driver and pop out a jumper thats hard to get to. If you go with the 2x 640 vs 2x 750 you will have 1280gb of storage vs 1500gb. only a 220 difference, unless you really need all that space which i doubt.

Taken from newegg.com
Western Digital: 14.8 cents per gig.2x640gb= $190 without shipping or taxes
Seagate: 17.3 cents per gig. 2x750gb=$260 without shipping or taxes

$70 difference, with $25 more you can get a 3rd western digital. Great value if you ask me.

LOL!

I tend to keep my drives for a long time. Just had a five year old WD drive die a month ago. If only that drive was a Seagate....:(

ordered my Maxtor MaXLine III 7L300S0 300GB on 11/8/2005 7:47:35 PM and they are getting replaced very soon due to insane amounts of clicking and SLOW seak times.
