Since 750GB drives are getting so cheap nowadays, I'm wondering how good of an idea it would be to grab a pair, throw in an enclosure (2-bay eSATA or NAS) and use that as my backup solution to replace the usual burning to DVD+Rs. I wouldn't be using RAID or anything like that, and the files backed up would be mostly anime fansubs and music. I know hard drives can be a good solution as long as they are only spinning when needed to maximize their lifespan, so that's what I would be doing here. My only major concern would be having to replace hard drives as they fill up, which could get annoying.

So would switching to an external box be a good idea? Or would sticking with DVD+Rs be a better solution overall?

Coming from a person that works in the Backup Software industry there are plus's and minus's to both.

Personally, I would go with External HDD's.
Over 150 DVD's to keep track of and keep safe, secure, and periodically checking them, or an external HDD enclosure to keep safe, secure, and periodically checking it. I know which one I would do. ;)

Regarding filled up hard drives, do you think its a better idea to swap out drives in a single enclosure? Or just buy a new enclosure along with new drives when the previous one(s) are full?
