I'm new to RAID arrays and basically just know the differences between the different types of arrays and have chosen RAID 5 for my server build. This server will be basically a home file server/exchange server so I want a lot of fast storage. I was originally planning on just using the onboard RAID controller on the motherboard but instead got a few drives for dirt cheap so I have some money to spend on a hardware RAID controller. I am unaware of any sites that benchmark raid cards so I was wondering what are your suggestions. My budget is about $200-250.
Thanks guys,
Dan

Its my impression that $250 might not be enough, if you want to obtain "a lot of fast storage" management. But try looking into the Dell Perc5, search here and on 2cpu.coms forum, there is a lot of info on it. It can be had on ebay from between $130-180. You will need a SAS SATA cable on top of this though, $30. Do note, reading these Perc5 threads, that it can be a hassle to get working! Check the motherboard compatiblity list on 2cpu too.
If you are capable of spending a little more, like around $400, I know Areca 1220, Highpoint 3520, and 3Ware 9650SE are popular here and elsewhere. Also LSI is worth checking out. Look into what processors they are using to get an idea of their power handling many drives in advanced configurations.

So if I go with this Perc 5i (http://cgi.ebay.com/Dell-PowerEdge-Perc-5i-256MB-SAS-RAID-Controller-TU005_W0QQitemZ320265452936QQihZ011QQcategoryZ96881QQssPageN ameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting) will it pretty much work with any motherboard that has a PCIe 4x slot?

I would go for one of the motherboards that other users have listed that it works with. I donīt think you can assume its going to work with any board with a PCIE 4x slot. But you gotta be a bit courageous to do this, the Perc5 might need flashing and then there is the configuration of the RAID as well. In any case, let us know what you decide on and how you are doing. Good luck. :)
