Rig in sig.I have had vista dual boot for a while but have not used it much. Has vista 3d rendering caught up or passed Xp ? IM running all latest patches and updates for both systems and it feels like Conan might be slower under Vista but its hard to be sure...
Im playing Grid, Conan and Mass Effect mostly.
Thanks..

I think the difference is minimal at this point, just make sure you install latest drivers for audio and video for Vista to take advantage of optimizations.
You can always use fraps to get fps scores while gaming and compare both oses for yourself.

I know x-fi has been a pain. I have good stable x-fi drivers and have no issues with any games under vista but I think they are old. Should I just leave them ?

The most recent comparison I've seen is this one:
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2302500,00.asp
In that test, there was no practical difference in any of the games tested.

While the gap has narrowed considerably since Vista's release, I still find XP better for gaming. I am using Vista 64 so that may be the reason. Vista 64 as a whole is incredibly stable & secure.

It all depends on drivers. With ATI drivers no loss in Vista and there are some gains. With Nvidia there are still some performance losses, but not too much.

On my gaming rig I see no difference between XP and Vista speedwise. You only notice if you're nitpicking over benchmarks. Comparing Vista to XP reminds me of the days where people wanted 200+ fps when 80fps was all you ever needed.
I say go with Vista. Your 8800GTX can handle it just fine. What resolution is your DLP screen anyways?

I tried the 3dmark 2001 to 2006 and results were within 3% of each other. 2001 was consistently faster on XP and 2006 was faster on Vista64
Still, the promise of faster gaming on vista is not yet met.

You're taking it out of context. Vista is proportionally faster than XP. Compare Vista now to XP at it's same timeframe a year after it was launch. Vista *is* superior to XP in that aspect.

XP didn't get any faster, cpus, memory, chipsets and gpus did.
Actually xp probably is slower than when first released.

I didn't say the operating system got faster. I meant how the operating system ran with hardwares at that time frame.
