Anybody know how to get rid of it? I've searched but come up empty.
TIA

if you have the build number in thr corner of you install of vista that means you are running an evaluation copy of the OS and it will begin to timebomb after a while
and no there is no way to get rid of it (if it says build 6000 thats RTM if it says 6001 thats sp1)

It's the Technet version. No time bomb.

If you run systeminfo, what does it say? That build number shouldn't show on an production version.

It says :
Version 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Build 6001
It's the Technet version. Vista Ultimate x64

Might be a feature of Technet builds, since developers/beta testers normally like to see that info. You could try disabling it in registry via -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Control Panel, Desktop, change the value of PaintDesktopVersion from 1 to 0. It might only work in XP though, I haven't checked if it is the same for Vista. It was pulled from the following blog: http://blogs.technet.com/jhoward/archive/2004/12/08/278205.aspx.
I'll be installing the same Technet build this weekend so I can confirm if it shows up for me as well.

I'd forgotten about this, good find. It doesn't show up in MSDN versions. I've confirmed that this setting is in Vista. I just turned it on. I had to log out and back in to get it to show.

I tried the registry hack. It's value was already 0 but I changed it to 1 just for s&g. Nothing changed. Apparently it's somewhere else in the registry. I may do a search this weekend and see what I can find.

The only time I've seen the version number in any production version of Visa is if the machine is having activiation issues. It usually has text about it below the version number. No registry hack to get it to go away in that instance. You have to fix the activation problem.
If it is just showing the version number, the registry entry below is the correct one. Killing all the explorer.exe instances and restarting explorer.exe or logging off and back on is required to make it take effect.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\Paintdesktop=0, display off
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\Paintdesktop=1, display on
edit: The old kill explorer trick isn't enough. I had to log off and back on, but the registry setting works as advertised. I tested on Vista Ultimate x64

It activated normally without any error messages so I assume activation is OK.

I downloaded the Vista Ultimate SP1 X64 from Technet as well. After installing, my Vista Ultimate seems to be missing alot of things. No Aero, no Dreamscene, lots of media entertainmet stuff gone...no updates. I tried updating my vista ultimate experience and windows. Says everything is up to date and I cannot download anything in the way of an update. Media center has errors .
I did not Vlite this install...I wanted the full install, but after this, I looked at it in Vlite and a whole ton of crap is missing!!! I have not activated it, but I doubt that activating it will make a difference. As I said, a whole ton of crap is just not there, I did have a full Vista Ultimate download I got from..other ways and the legit one I just got from technet seems stripped. Anyone know if one of the all in one vista x64 packs actually has the full Vista Ultimate? Seems kinda fucked up for them to take nearly everything out of the one download they have listed as Vista Ultimate SP1 X64 that I wanted, this might as well have been a Vista basic...with issues. I am thinking Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1 Checked/Debug Build (x64) - DVD (English) is not a production release??? Now that I think about it, Checked/Debug Build kinda probably means it's not? Just downloaded that because it was the only Ultimate X64 one there, but assume the ones listed as Vista X64 and are 3.700+ GB include everything.

Casca, you didn't download the right version from TechNet. You want the one, second from the bottom called Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 (x64) - DVD (English)

Debug build will be slower as well.

Yah, downloaded that last night and VLited it. Pretty much had everything that the not so ligitimate Vista Ultimate I have..had., so doesn't seem to be anything missing. Yep, I am the type to start something and then read directions later :p

What he said. You guys are downloading the Checked/Debug build, it's not what you want; as it will have a ton of problems for you. The DVD versions at the bottom are identical to the retail disks that contain every version of the OS.
Also, if you want to pick something besides ultimate, just don't enter a key during setup, and it will allow you to pick which version to install. I'm pretty sure you can just change the key later without having to upgrade the install.

Well crapholio, now all of a sudden it makes sense. I'm running the checked/debug version. I feel like a total DA. Thanks guys for putting me out of my misery. I'm DL'ing the correct versions as I type this.

Hehe...I sort of did the same thing the first time. It would BSOD during the install, and I went nuts trying to figure it out..then I looked at the download options again and was like awwww.....wtf. http://www.newoldie.com/forumpics/smilies/rant2.gif
Vista works much better now. ;)

Yah, downloaded that last night and VLited it.
I avoid that software like the plague. Don't be surprised if you have some weird issues, or find out that you can't update anymore.

I'm Baaaaaaaaaaaaack !!!!!!!
Installing the CORRECT flavor of Vista x64 was a helluva lot simpler than the checked/debug version and it fixed all my problems. No more slow Windows Explorer and no more build # in the lower right.
What happened, and I'm sure others have done the same thing, is, MS didn't label the regular versions as Ultimate but they did the build versons. Anyone looking for Ultimate and not thinking will grab the wrong version like I did and think nothing of it till the problems start cropping up. I post here about the build # and about the slow Explorer. All I got was a bunch of Huh?'s Hopefully, others who stray down the wrong path as I did will find this thread and it'll save them some grief. Thanks for the help guys.

Not to sound like an ass, but by now, it should be common knowledge that a Vista disc is a Vista disc is a Vista disc. I know for the average John Q Public that wouldn't be common knowledge, but the TechNet account says you aren't what's known as a DFU. Yes, I realize that makes me sound like a dick, but I'm getting older now, so I'm allowed to be cranky.

Technet has iso's available for download that are not the same as the mainstream OEM/Retail disks; and it's easy to mistake them for the standard versions if you're new to it.

I haven't seen any OEM or Retail iso's on TechNet for OSes as of yet, to be honest. I have a Direct account, so maybe they are there for others, but grayed out for me.

DAMN I just made the same mistake. I feel like a DA, I installed the build TWO times.
So the last one on the list is the right one? I also got in on the Tech subscription :D
Btw, if my system only has 2GB, should I use Vista 64 bit anyway?
Any performance gain/loss?
Joe Average

Gain? Definitely. Loss? Only patience listening to idiots preaching "Stick with 32 bit, there's no use for 64 bit yet." :D
You'll be fine with 64 bit and 2GB without issues, but it wouldn't hurt to keep an eye on your actual RAM usage (not counting SuperFetch, etc) over the first few weeks. If you tend to run a lot of big applications and leave them running, you might consider a bump to 3 or 4GB later on. If not, and if 2GB suits you and the way you use your PC, so be it.
