Hey all,

I'm looking for an external hard drive that allows me to connect to it via ethernet as well as USB. Does such a drive exist? The only drives I find that have a ethernet port state that the USB is only allowed to attach additional storage, not allow me to access it via USB.

Thanks in advance!

Kurt

is it safe to assume that such a device doesn't exist?

It exists. I've seen some on newegg by various makers, though many do indeed only allow USB for additional storage.

Can you point me in the right direction? I've been all over newegg and the only ones that i've found with usb and ethernet connectivity only allow usage of the usb for external storage only...

Here is my goal, my dvd player (OPPO DV-980H) allows me to plug in a USB drive to access movies (divx, xvid, etc) stored on the drive. What I'd like to do is get a larger external drive to plug into the dvd player which would give me the capability of watching all of my movies. From the dvd player, I could access the external drive (through the USB connection) and watch any of those movies. I had run an ethernet jack to that location as well. That way when I rip my dvds on my computer in my office, I can just copy the files right from my computer and put it on the drive via ethernet. Because of this, I would need both capabilities. Yes, I know I can just keep relocating the HD everytime I wanted to copy more to it, but that would be a pain.

I've thought about doing an external drive enclosure to allow this to happen. I found some one newegg that have mixed reviews. This would probably be my last resort option as none of them support gigabit ethernet, which is what I'm running. If I have to suck it up and use 10/100, then I will. I just would like to get gigabit if possible.

Also, I realize that build a media server to do this, but it will be much more costly to implement. I just bought a house and am getting married next weekend, so funds aren't readily available.

Any other suggestions?
