Hey everyone,

My laptop of 5 years is dying on me. (see Lappy in sig for stats).

I have been using the laptop for emailing as I have moved my operations to my desktop. I decided to restart the laptop and now it does not want to get into windows.

I get a BSOD for a quick second before it restarts. This happens when I try to boot normally and when i try to boot into any safe mode.

A bunch of my personal files are on that computer so I kinda want to get them back.

I tried booting into Ubuntu live CD but I have no idea how to gain access to the files on the hard drive. Such a n00b :(

So what am I to do ... how can I get my files back ... or get windows back ...

If you have a Windows XP CD you can do a repair install. You will keep all your files.

You could also try hitting F8 after post and getting the windows advanced boot options menu. From there you could try "last known good configuration" or "disable automatic restart on system failure" get the bsod error code and post it here.

if you don't know how to do a repair install go to windowsreinstall.com they have all the guides.

Ouch, that does suck.

Scratch that. I didn't see the bsod post.

Unmountable boot volume doesn't always mean you're screwed. I chkdsk could fix it.

to run chkdsk, boot to the cd again, but instead of choosing "enter" for installing windows, hit "R" and it'll bring you to the recovery console. once you get the c:\> just type chkdsk /r and let it run. It could take a while but it might fix it.

hmmm i thought of doing that but i didnt know if it would fix the boot record

anyway its at 50% now... and has been there for the past 5 mins...

don't sweat it. It'll go up to 75% and drop back down a few times. That's normal. It could take up to an hour or more depending on hdd size, errors it finds, etc.

usually if you look up that bsod on google the first microsoft article tells you to run chkdsk /r first. It's basically like step 1.
