I have a WD 500GB SATA drive in a Thermaltake enclosure, connected to my IP35 Pro through eSATA. Using the JMicron JMB363 controller in IDE mode, I get 1.5 MB/s average read speeds in HD Tach. Is this to be expected?

No, that's way too low. Should be roughly comparable to internal SATA speeds (actually, probably should be identical). Have you tried in it AHCI mode at all? I have two external enclosures with WD drives (one is a 5000AAKS) and using the Intel controller on my -DS4 it is the same performance as the internal drives.

I tried AHCI earlier, but couldn't get it to recognize the drive. I just reinstalled the AHCI driver, and now get 68 MB/s! Intense!!

Burst rate is a hair below SATA I (the drive is SATA II), but beggars can't be choosers.
