Once again I'm considering moving my main storage array out of my main computer. I want to know if there will be any kind of lag when viewing the files on the file server from my main system.
I will be using a D-Link DIR-655 router which has gigabit and gigabit ethernet on both systems.

Thanks

At my house i have that exact setup a workstaiton with Gbe a server w/ Gbe and DIR-655. there is more latency when opening up the files in explorer. but i play HDDVD's and Blu-rays over the network just fine.

Damn, you can stream HD? I really need to ditch this wireless BS and get with it. My main choke point is that my XBOX XBMC is running off of an XBOX gaming adapter and can stream divx but can't stream even DVD quality... Need to get a legit HTPC soon........

I have the same router and there is very very little lag when accessing files on my server from a wired PC. However, there is a slight lag when accessing files on the server wirelessly. Though do note that my server is a bit old. Specs of server are in sig.

I have no problems playing anything over network, including HD, despite using a pentium 3 as a server, and using software raid. You may need to set the buffer larger in your media player software to prevent occasional dropouts, but it's not a big deal. I am using gigabit ethernet, but I hardly ever use enough bandwidth to warrant it. I haven't tried HD over wireless, but I know DivX/SD content will work fine (I've even streamed that over the Internet, for that matter :p).

Even Blu-ray at 1080p is 40 Mbps, so technically you can stream it on a 10/100 network.

the only lag i ever notice is the time taken to find the pc shares the first time i look for them on Vista other than that no probs i can happily send video to the other 4 pc in the house
