If you could buy any of the the following which would you buy. I want a good panel for photos and general work but also some light gaming. I have two systems I want to connect.
NEC 2490 /2690 or HP LP3065

hmmm.....depends what you are going to do with it...those NEC's are upper tier photo work monitors with 12 bit LUT's - if you're not going to take advantage of the LUT's then i'd opt for the HP

First do both your system have dual link DVI's? Only dual link DVI can drive the LP3065 properly.
After that, how important is consistent accurate color to you? The 2690 and 3065 are both wide gamut panels and will display sRGB colors incorrectly with an over saturated appearance in non color managed applications (which is most applications).
I am thinking along similar lines and here is my plan. I will get a Dell 3007 (similar to 3065) if I find a good sale (in Canada). Then I will try to tame the over saturation in the graphics card settings. If I can get normal looking colors out of it, I will keep it. If not I return it. I would love the extra resolution of the 30" but not if I can't get the colors looking correct.
If the 30" does't work out, I will likely get NEC 2490 for consistent accurate color everywhere as it is a standard gamut (sRGB) panel with internal calibration. It will be correct in every application (games, movies, images, Linux, etc, EVERWHERE).
I am not considering the 2690 because it doesn't offer me the extra resolution, but still sticks me with the wider than normal color gamut and associated issues.

If your main usage for the monitor is going to be photo editing, I would buy one of the NECs.
Out of the two NEC, if you are going to be working in a wide-gamut color space, buy the 2690. If you are not, buy the 2490.

Yes the new Mac Pro I have on the way has the Nvidia 8800GT in it and I have another 8600GT in the other system. My not a photo pro but I do like to mess around. I do some freelance web site work for people who wouldn't know the first thing about color.
I was thinking the extra resolution would be nice. But the over saturation of color kinda make me wonder.
Big, Good, Fast, Why do I have to pick two. : (
They are all great monitors.
Remember the HP does not have a true scaler. It will work fine with 2560 or 1280x800, but all other resolutions will likely not be displayed at all.
Out of these, I would probably recommend the LCD2490. Even if your clients know nothing about color, you may want to :) The LCD2490Wuxi-BKSV is perfect for you because of its standard gamut and built in calibration.
And these are decent monitors for gaming. I just bought the 2690, and it might be overkill for me :)

Unless there is something odd about your setup, the graphics card will automatically scale other resolutions on 30" panels, so you are not limited to 2560x1600 and 1280x800.
Though you can't feed anything other than a computer signal into these panels generally (HD players, Xbox, PS3 won't work) but you should be able to run just about any computer resolution you want to try.
Yes you are 100% right, and the nice part is, with the scaler built in to the card you don't incur extra input lag or performance loss. Just as long as you have a dual-link capable card and a dual-link cable, so this means cards with HDMI out only would have issues (as HDMI is only single-link).
Forgot about that! Thanks for reminding me that I am always the one preaching video card scalers :)

I think then I am going to go for the resolution. My day job is as a computer security officer and I don't think you can ever have enough resolution. I'll pick up a color calibration tool to try to work the colors.
Thanks for your help.
