View Full Version : help with a pentium 805 that's only made it to 3.1ghz

I know what you guys are thinking, especially since the 805 has been know to got to 3.6ghz on air. I'm pretty sure this is the best that I can do, considering that I got the cpu with the mobo for super cheap (think $80). :p
I'm using an ECS RC410L/800-M (probably the cheapest mobo ever made) so it doesn't let me touch the Vcore settings (!) but I'm surprised it support running the DRAM asynchronously. Anyway I'm reading the voltage off CPU-Z and it moves from 1.296-1.312v. Why is this? Is that what people mean by Vdroop?
Do you think I need to increase the voltage to get this CPU any higher? And if I were to buy a mobo that supports changing the Vcore, how would I know how much to increase the voltage by? I know this CPU supports up to 1.4v but I don't want to fry it.
I'm pretty sure I need to change mobo but I'm just toying with this since this has been my first real OCing project where I don't have to worry about frying my main computer! :D
Yes, that's it. And yes, you may need to up the vCore, but you won't be able to on that board I take it (ECS !good for overclocking)? There may be some way to vMod the board, but I don't know, nor would I even attempt it personally.
As to how much, it just depends, no one can really help you there. Best I can say is try, and if temps are in check, and it passes a decent Prime95 run, you're golden. It also could be a shitty board you have (more than is obvious already that is). A newer, quality board may allow the same speed at a lower vCore.
Just a thought, why upgrade the board? You'd probably have a bit of a hard time finding a good overclocking Preshott board anywhere other than [H]/eBay/etc these days (seems to be mostly crappy ECS/PCChips/Jetway/etc @ the Egg of example).
I would personally look into a e21x0/abit IP35-E.. ~$120 and could probably beat the PD805 like a red headed step child, all while being cooler. Although to get a max o/c on them, an aftermarket cooler *might* be called for (ie: ~$30 Xigmatek S1283 is a nice bang for the buck right now).

Ya I have to agree. The e21x0 are so cheap, but I already had everything installed on here months before I thought of overclocking it. :\ I've been just fiddling around with the clock settings this weekend, even though I know the Prescotts run real hot to begin with. I stopped at 3.1ghz, but was stable with Prime95. I got some errors at 3.2, probably because of the board, since couple overclocks I've seen used stock Vcore until 3.6-3.8. :(
But hey, this summer I'll probably build myself a quad core to truely witness the power overclocking unleashes! (RAWR!) :D

The best I got on that board was 3.8, chip was ice cold w/ the stock cooler....man it had so much more in it. :D
It does its job @ 3.0 in my parents computer now. Where you get it? Lemme guess.... Fry's 2 years ago for $99...lol

Hmmm maybe I should reapply the thermal paste. It won't boot up at 3.4ghz though so it not heat-related. :(

Get an e2xxx. There's no reason not to, unless the motherboard doesn't support it. They're dirt cheap, and the pound the shit out of the pd805 at much lower clocks.
You do not need to reinstall windows for a CPU change like that (I don't think. It shouldn't need it)
