View Full Version : Finding SP1

I have downloaded SP1 on my two desktops that run on Vista Home Premium.

My Portable PC, Compaq Presario V6000 uses Vista Business. I have tried to use Windows Update to find SP1. It won't find it. I have used "check for updates" several times last night and several today without success.

Am I limited to downloading the full version of the SP1 or is there another way to get the SP1 upgrade. I thought this would be much easier...

I'm not aware of an a la cart SP1. My Windows Update didn't find SP1 either.

Since I'm a little unsure of what you mean by downloaded, here's the link to the standalone installer.

thanks for the quick reply... By "downloaded", I mean "installed using Windows Update".

I will get the stand alone and try it that way.

Is there a delay to getting SP1 for the business version ?

Yes Yes...but the download of the standalone is 434 MB. Note that the Windows Update version is about 60MB. I was wondering if anybody knew why the Business version (32-bit) wasn't finding the Windows Update version.... thanks for the link

I don't know the exact reason, but I know that some people have had the same issue.
My system couldn't find the update either, do I just downloaded the standalone install.
I believe the file was around 726mb in size.

I installed the 440MB+ standalone installer on Business 32-bit. Took only 36 minutes without issue.

If Windows Update does not see it, you may have something blocking Windows Update from presenting it to you.

ok, I think i found the problem.

Cause 5. I have had problems with updating the Conexant HD Audio drivers. I had to roll back the update I had loaded for them to make the audio work on the PC.

Apparently there is a problem between these drivers and Vista. So this must be why Update won't offer SP1.

DON'T USE THE STANDALONE INSTALLER! If you don't see it in Windows Update, IT'S FOR A REASON! Read Microsoft's article that someone linked to above to figure out why Windows Update is hiding it from you. It's probably just an old driver that you need to update first. Otherwise you're just asking for problems. There would be no one running in to problems installing SP1 if Microsoft didn't release the stupid standalone download.

Well it's weird for me, kinda worried me. First, I just like everything to work the way it should.

I installed Vista Business x86 earlier and could only see, yes, 2.5gb of my ram. I'm not even lucky enough to see 3.2 gb like most people. Completely updated windows. Did not see SP1 on there but noticed I had yet to install graphics driver (yellow !). So I installed and finished updating, including sp1 (went very smooth) says 4gb in my computer but in task bar only shows 2.5gb available.

So I dropped my x64 disk in, partitioned again and installed x64, completely updated but SP 1 wasn't available. Checked drivers, all updated. checked languages, no option to even uninstall them (only ultimate?). Rebooted, still nothing. I jumped on here to see if anyone else had a problem, noticed someone mentioned a bad audio driver (for some reason the most recent driver available on the mobo website is older than the one they gave me on the disk), so I thought I would have to uninstall it. But I checked one last time and SP1 was then available on there.

So I have no idea why SP1 didn't show up at first, but after the system ran for a few minutes, it showed up.

...... whatever.

It really depends on the driver in question. I use a home security system, and with the drivers installed, I couldn't get it on update.

I un-installed sp1 and the driver, re-installed from updates and re-installed the camera drivers.... which work just fine with sp1. I am pretty sure everything would of worked fine the way I had it, but I had a hunch about the camera drivers. I just wanted to make sure.

Mine was "hiding," but it installed quickly and without issue.

Includes multiple languages as well, not really the "tailored" pack for the system you are running.

BINGO!

This is why I have ZERO sympathy for anyone running around manually installing this, and then borking their system. It ain't showing up for a reason. And even if it did- it's an optional update at this point.

There would be no one running in to problems installing SP1 if Microsoft didn't release the stupid standalone download.
Then you'd have people complaining how Microsoft sucks not giving them SP1, when it's "Their" system, "Their" choices (I can see that argument plain as day)...

Well, some of that RAM could be allocated to your graphics card.

As for your x64 system, those use different drivers than your x86 system, not surprising it would not have been offered.

I read the Microsoft Article that is mentioned above. This is the definitive statement on why SP1 doesn't show up in Windows Update. If you follow what are simple instructions that MS has laid out here you can probably solve other problems that Vista might have given you.

I solved my problem. Thanks again for the info, this forum has been very helpful for me on many occasions.

Too late did that last night :) and you know what ? :P After i installed it everything works like normal but my network wasn't working :( so then i went to intel's site and saw that they released a new driver 12.4 less then a month old compared to the 12.1 that i had, and after i installed that*took a few tries* it finally worked!! So i guess that was why the sp1 didn't showed up :D silly me. But glad it all works and notice a bit faster performance then without sp1, and that i didn't get too much trouble :D.

+1 for it was "hiding" from me. I DLed the sneaky bastard and am right as rain less than 30 minutes later. Good times.

PS: I notice no differences between SP1 and non-SP1.

Did it 5 times now and I have no issues... Not "cheating death", it's doing your research ahead of time before installing an optional update.
