I have been told to do this. It does work for getting into a folder but it wont work when i want to drag the file onto my new hard drive.

Open an explorer window
> - Find the folder you need access to
> - Right-click it
> - Click Properties
> - Click the Security Tab
> - Click Edit
> - Click Add
> - Type your username and press enter.
> - Click the checkbox under Allow next to Full Control
> - Click OK
> - Click OK

EDIT: i got the first problem out of the way, but i still got another problem

Try taking ownership of the hard drive. Its in the security tab and at the bottom is the "Advance" button. Look for owner tab and make sure your username is the owner. On the same owner tab click edit and check the replace owner on subcontainers and objects. Hope that works.

When you right click a file in the old hard drive does it give you the option to delete the file?

Try changing ownership while being logged into the administrator account.

yes it does.

Where are you trying to copy the files to?

The first message was definitely a permissions issue because your user didn't have access to the source. The second one almost looks like it's an issue with where you're saving the files to. I could be wrong, though...

problem solved. The folders i were trying to acess were in documents\settings so i took them out and just put them under C. So when i click on it they are in a folder right under C and transfering files now. I just dont think vista can transfer files from XP's documents and settings.

You should be able to. I've been doing it since Vista came out. I can tell you that I am the administrator in Vista, and when I had xp (x64 even) I could take stuff from my users' docs and settings to my vista users' docs and settings.

And yet people seem to take issue with my recommendations to ALWAYS use a data drive, and not the "my" folders. If a data drive was used, not only would the files not need to be transferred anywhere, but there'd be no permission issues either.

Yes, I believe you should always put all your data on a separate drive. Leave your OS drive for just that and programs. I don't think I have ever used those preconfigure folders, ever. All my drives except one is my data drive. I'm sure you can guess what drive the OS is on.

permissions are a bitch with vista, there's no way around it.

make sure the permissions and ownership propogate down.
