I just installed Vista 64 Business and SP1 on a freshly formatted HD, and all went well except the wireless LAN. It runs very slowly, oftentimes not being able to display a page. Runs like this in both Foxfire and IE. This is an EDIMAX EW-7728In card that works great with XP 64.

I've tried turning off the firewall (all 3 of them), and there seems to be a very slight improvement, but nowhere near full speed, and not even close to something I would consider using. I checked the drivers and they are current. I've double checked that the wireless LAN settings are the same as I'm using in the XP 64 that works fine (on the same computer, by a BIOS change to boot the other HD).

Also, while it takes a LONG time to connect, once I'm able to run the Internet Speed Test:
http://www.speedtest.net/
...it runs the download and upload tests just fine, about the same speed as XP 64, 8300 kb/s downstream, 900 kb/s upstream, about normal for my Charter cable connection. So it must be somewhere in the web page nanny state mindset of Vista, but I have tried to turn everything off. So I'm at a loss.

Question: is there something I can do to tune this up so I can actually use Vista? I'm happy with XP64, but as time goes on it will get less support so if I can get Vista to work even close to as well as XP, I'd like to start using it.

You Vista boosters, can you help me please?

What do you mean, all three firewalls?

What do you mean, all three firewalls?

Domain Profile, Private Profile, and Public Profile. Find it through Admin Tools.

...but if you don't know this you probably aren't going to be up to offering any expert advice.

interesting, didnt think each had it's own firewall, vista has 1 firewall accessible via the network area.... your not on a domain by any chance?

no, just the standard home net workgroup. Same setup as with xp64.

An expert might point out that it's the same firewall, and you're just looking at three different configuration profiles.

Are you using Vista X64 drivers?

Well duh! It's the same OS too. An expert might point out some helpful information about what is going on. Sheesh.

As far as I know. I downloaded them from the web site. It only said Vista, not Vista64, but it claimed Vista64 support and only had Vista in the driver matrix. Also when I installed them Vista didn't complain, and usually it prevents you from installing 32 bit drivers (and they shouldn't work at all in any case - this works but it works very badly).

There are two versions for your EDIMAX EW-7728In:

v1.0 and 092107; have you tried either/or?

v1.0 - the other one is listed below, obviously an older, probably beta, version. Prefer not to install the beta if I can avoid it, although I might in desperation if nothing else works. So far, XP64 works great, Vista64 is flaky in the extreme, as described above. So I'll probably have to go back to XP64 where I can actually forget about the OS and do actual work again. I just hoped with SP1 Vista would be less flaky.

Version 092107 gives no indication of being beta; older, does not necessarily mean worse. I would suggest trying it before deeming the OS "flaky".

At the same time, what wireless client are you using? The Edimax or the Vista client? Have you tried the other?

Well you were right. Uninstalling v1.0 (which was the driver both on the CDROM and the download from the web site), and installing 092107 (only available on the web site) seems to have solved the problem. It's been through several resets and shutdowns/startups, and it is holding good. Thanks.

You are welcome. I am glad the other driver solved your problem.
